Turn a messy SOP into a reusable agent skill
ChatGPT compresses a long standard operating procedure into a SKILL.md-shaped skill with triggers, steps, and explicit stop conditions.
A skill draft you can drop into your agent folder, with fluff removed and every must-do step tied to an observable result.
- 1
Paste the SOP with the ugly parts
Include the email thread rules and the exceptions. Cleaning before paste hides the constraints the skill needs.
- 2
Mark conflicts for a human
Resolve every Resolve with owner line with your lead before anyone runs the skill on production.
- 3
Trial on one real ticket
Run the skill on a low-risk example and tick the done checklist against what actually happened.
The prompt to paste
Convert this SOP into an agent skill file (SKILL.md format). The SOP is messy; your job is to make it runnable without losing hard requirements. SOP paste: [paste: headings optional, duplicates OK, include who approves and what systems are touched] Output SKILL.md with: - Purpose (one sentence) - When to use / when not to use - Required inputs (what the human must attach or paste before starting) - Steps (numbered; each step ends with "Verify:" and one observable check) - Example prompts (two short ones that invoke this skill correctly) - Pitfalls (where people skip approval, paste wrong env, or confuse similar tickets) - Done means (checklist; include any approval step from the SOP verbatim) Rules: - If the SOP says must or required, keep it. Do not soften to should. - If two sections contradict, list both under a "Resolve with owner" bullet instead of picking. - Remove duplicate steps and narrative history. Keep dates, approvers, and system names. - Do not add tools or APIs not named in the SOP. - Markdown only, no commentary outside the file.
Compression is not permission to drop approvals. If the SOP named a person or system, the skill must still name them.
