Turn a receipt photo into an expense row
Gemini reads a receipt image and returns a single expense row with vendor, date, amount, and category for your sheet.
One row you can paste into a spreadsheet or expense tool, with fields the model could not read marked unknown.
- 1
Photograph the full receipt
Include the total, date, and merchant name. Cropped tips and tax lines are where amounts go wrong.
- 2
Check amount and date against the paper
Reject the row if either disagrees with the receipt. Low confidence on tax is fine; wrong totals are not.
- 3
Paste into the sheet
Add the row to your expense log the same day. The case ends when the books match the receipt in your hand.
The prompt to paste
I will upload a photo of a receipt. Extract one expense row for my tracker. Categories I use: [list: meals, travel, software, office, other] Return a table with exactly these columns: - Date (ISO if visible, else unknown) - Vendor - Currency - Amount (numeric, no currency symbol in the cell) - Category (from my list only) - Payment method (if shown, else unknown) - Notes (tax, tip, or line items that explain the total) - Confidence: high / medium / low for the amount and date Rules: - If the image is blurry or cropped, say which fields are unreliable instead of guessing. - If multiple totals appear, use the amount actually charged and explain in Notes. - Do not invent a vendor name from a logo you cannot read. After the table, list any fields marked unknown and what I should type manually.
A receipt photo is not a tax document. You still keep the original image for audit.
