Explain this query to the person who asked
ChatGPT translates a SQL query into plain language and names the rows it might surprise someone.
A short explanation a non-author can read, plus the assumptions the query is making.
- 1
Paste the query
Include the comments if they explain a filter. Leave out connection strings.
- 2
Check the joins
Confirm the plain-language join matches what you meant. This is where explanations drift.
- 3
Send the sentence
Give the teammate the one-sentence answer and the misread. Keep the rest if they ask.
The prompt to paste
Explain this SQL query to a teammate who did not write it. They know the product. They do not want a tutorial on SQL. Query: [paste] Return: 1. What question the query answers, in one sentence. 2. Which tables it reads, and how they are joined, in plain language. 3. Filters that would change the result if someone misunderstood them. 4. One way the result could be misread. Do not rewrite the query unless I ask. Do not invent column meanings. If a name is ambiguous, say so.
The model cannot see your warehouse. Column meaning still belongs to you.
