Share one PR-description skill across Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code
One SKILL.md in the repo defines how every coding agent writes PR bodies from a diff, with a short load line per tool.
A single skill file, three pointer lines documented in CONTRIBUTING, and sample PR bodies that match section-for-section.
- 1
Retire duplicate PR prompts
Search personal Cursor rules and team wikis for old PR templates. Delete copies the day the skill lands.
- 2
Commit under the team skills root
Use the same folder as your other agent skills. Link it from CONTRIBUTING in one sentence per tool.
- 3
Generate three bodies on one PR
Run the skill from Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code on the same open PR. Section gaps mean the skill text is vague, not that one vendor is worse.
The prompt to paste
Create a shared PR-description skill for our repository. Copilot Chat, Cursor, and Claude Code should all load the same SKILL.md — not three paraphrases. Repo facts: [test commands, PR template if any, risky paths reviewers care about] SKILL.md must define: - Purpose: write a reviewer-ready PR description from the current diff. - When to use: after the diff is stable, before requesting review; when not to use: empty WIP branches. - Required inputs: PR link or branch name, optional ticket id, whether this is a hotfix. - Output sections (fixed order): Summary, Test plan (checkbox list), Risk, Out of scope. - Rules inside the skill: do not claim tests exist unless the diff shows them; mark unknown commands [confirm]; no marketing tone; cap Summary at two short paragraphs. - Two example prompts: one for a small bugfix, one for a multi-file feature. - Pitfalls: inventing test plans, hiding config or migration risk, describing files not in the diff. - Done means: human pasted the body into GitHub and ran at least one test-plan checkbox locally. Also return a ## Tool pointers block (outside SKILL.md) with: - GitHub Copilot: how to reference the skill in PR chat [verify current UI strings]. - Cursor: path and AGENTS.md / rules one-liner. - Claude Code: skills path and config file name. Do not duplicate the full SKILL.md text inside the pointers. Git path is the single source of truth.
Copilot only sees the PR context you open. If the diff is huge, the skill should tell the agent to prioritize top behavior files — not to summarize every rename.
