Share a Cursor project skill without multi-machine drift
Cursor helps you store a project skill in the repo so every machine loads the same SKILL.md instead of a private Rules for me note.
A checked-in skill path, a one-line pointer in project rules, and a quick test that two clones behave the same.
- 1
Move private rules into the skill
Anything you typed only in Cursor Settings should land in SKILL.md or be deleted. Settings do not travel with the repo.
- 2
Point rules at the file once
Project rules should reference the skill path, not restate it. Two sources of truth will diverge within a week.
- 3
Run the sync test on two clones
Open the same task on both machines. If outputs differ before anyone edits code, fix the skill text, not the model.
The prompt to paste
I need a Cursor project skill that stays in sync across machines. No personal-only rules. Project: [stack, repo layout, and the job this skill should do every time] Current pain: [what drifts today: naming, test commands, folders people edit by habit] Deliver: 1. Recommended folder for the skill in this repo (.cursor/skills/<name>/SKILL.md or the path we already use). 2. Full SKILL.md content: purpose, when to use, steps with checks, pitfalls, done checklist. 3. The exact one- or two-line addition for .cursor/rules or AGENTS.md that points agents at this skill without duplicating the whole file. 4. A sync test script or checklist: what I run on laptop A and laptop B to prove both load the same skill (include the Cursor setting or path to verify, generic if you must write [confirm in Settings]). Do not copy long style guides into the skill. Do not add secrets. If the repo has no skills folder yet, create the path in your answer and say to commit it.
Machine-local Cursor rules override team intent quietly. Delete duplicate instructions from personal scope before you trust the shared skill.
